Pakistan Rangers fire at Indian border post, 4 BSF personnel killed

Let’s give peace a chance in IoK says Indian army chief

Pakistan has violated ceasefire several times since the Directors-General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan agreed to strictly adhere to the ceasefire pact of 2003 and settle any border disputes through discussion.

The BSF ADG said that it was very unfortunate and "the ceasefire announcement made and agreed is to be honoured".

A BSF spokesman identified the martyred BSF personnel as Assistant Commandant Jitender Singh, Sub-Inspector Rajneesh, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramniwas and Constable Hansraj.

Pakistan's ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif's brother and PML-N chief Shehbaz Sharif has asked India to resume peace talks with Islamabad, saying the Singapore summit between the United States and North Korea should set a good precedent for both the bickering neighbours to follow.

During unprovoked cross-border firing by Pakistan, four fearless jawans laid down their lives while defending the sanctity of the country, a BSF spokesman said. Tension has again gripped the International Border after a brief lull. "We have lost four of our personnel, including an assistant commandant-rank officer, while three of our personnel suffered injuries", Inspector General, BSF (Jammu Frontier) Ram Awtar told PTI.

The high trajectory weapons firing by Pakistan Rangers started in the Ramgarh sector in Samba district of Jammu around 9.40 pm on Tuesday, said the spokesman, adding that the BSF strongly retaliated to the unprovoked firing but lost four of its personnel. There had been two meetings of sector commanders of BSF and Pakistan Rangers too who had resolved to strictly maintain the ceasefire. BSF troops also fired in retaliation, the official said.

The fresh ceasefire violation has come eight days after Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers held a commander-level meeting to end the hostilities and ensure peace on the International Border in Jammu division. There has been over 1,200 incidents of ceasefire violation.

Last month, thousands of people residing along the IB in Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts had to flee their homes following intense shelling from Pakistan between May 15 and May 23 which left 12 people dead, including two BSF jawans and an infant, and scores of others injured.

J&K witnessed over 700 ceasefire violations this year, starting from January.

Prior to it, the DGMO of Pakistan called up his Indian counterpart to stop retaliatory firing by the BSF and restore peace in the volatile border.
