Norwegian Lawmakers Nominate President Trump for 2018 Nobel Peace Prize

Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump

Two Norwegian lawmakers on Wednesday nominated U.S. President Donald Trump nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, citing Trump's historic summit on Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

The process of consideration for the award takes place in Norway.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said earlier this year that it had received 329 nominations for the 2018 award, the second-highest number to date. The prize would be next year's because the deadline for this year has already passed.

The lawmakers, Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen, are from the country's Progress Party, a right-leaning libertarian party.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with Trump for a summit Tuesday in Singapore, where they signed an agreement to work together towards peace and denuclearization. Two Norwegian lawmakers have nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The chancellor said migration represented a significant challenge for Europe when it was in a "very fragile situation". Salvini shot back that France has turned away thousands of migrants trying to reach France at Italy's northern border.

A few suggested a less "mainstream" option for the next Nobel Prize victor, recalling Dennis Rodman's efforts in establishing the dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in April that Trump deserved the prize.

Former recipients have included Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, and Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama.

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed an agreement on Tuesday pledging to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, though it's unclear what the timeline is for denuclearization and how the US will enforce it.

Trump has been cited as a possible nominee since Kim ended a series of provocative threats and missile tests previous year. Last year's victor was the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. In return, Trump promised to end "war games", or joint military exercises, with South Korea.
