May survives fresh Brexit vote but rebels up the pressure

Britain's Secretary of State for Education Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan

Remain-supporting Dr Lee quit as justice minister live on stage during a speech in London, saying he could not support "how our country's exit from the European Union looks set to be delivered".

The government was putting a combative spin on the concessions Tuesday evening: "The Brexit Secretary has set out three tests that any new amendment has to meet - not undermining the negotiations, not changing the constitutional role of Parliament and Government in negotiating worldwide treaties, and respecting the referendum result", a spokesperson for the Brexit department said in a statement.

"We have now removed every incentive from the European Union for doing a deal by the end of November", one senior United Kingdom government official said.

The government has surrendered; and the implications are vast.

Lawmakers supported the government's position to reject amendments to the EU withdrawal bill that challenged May's commitment to leave the bloc's customs union and single market, leaving the overall shape of her Brexit strategy intact that will transform Britain's trading relationships for decades.

It was defeated in the House of Commons by 327 votes to 126.

A statement from the Brexit ministry said the government had agreed to "look for a compromise".

The Lords amendment said that the Commons should get a vote on the proposed Brexit deal.

"A vote between bad and worse is not a meaningful vote. And I can not bring myself to vote for it in the bastion of liberty, freedom and human rights that is our Parliament". "It is, however, irresponsible to proceed as we are".

"Future generations will ask us why we didn't do more for the workers we represent".

The government didn't lose a single vote yesterday out of 14.

Pro-Brexit tabloid the Sun warned lawmakers on Tuesday's front page that they had a choice: "Great Britain or great betrayal".

Caroline Flint, a remainer whose Don Valley constituency voted more than two to one to leave, defended her constituents who she said had been insulted "day in and day out by some of the comments in this place and outside are not against all migration".

Some 74 Labour MPs, including Remainers Jess Phillips, Stella Creasy and Hilary Benn, rebelled against Corbyn to vote against the amendment to the EU (Withdrawal Bill).

MPs also overturned other changes made to the bill by the Lords, including a requirement for ministers to set out steps to negotiate a customs union with the EU.

He confirmed that ministers will seek to overturn 14 amendments which he said would undermine the goal of the Bill and fail to respect the result of the 2016 referendum.

Corbyn instructed his MPs to abstain on the amendment, meaning they should neither vote for or against it.

However, Devon Tory Sarah Wollaston signalled that she would back Mr Grieve's amendment.

"Grieve's amendment puts that right and in a way Govt could and should accept it".

Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer commented: "This vote was about ensuring parliament was given a proper role in the Brexit negotiations and that we avoid a no deal situation, which is becoming more likely with the divisions at the heart of this government".
