French Open champion Rafael Nadal

Nadal's love affair with Roland Garros continued as the "King of Clay" registered a 6-4 6-3 6-2 victory over Dominic Thiem in Sunday's final.

Nadal is the only second player in history to win the same Grand Slam on 11 occasions after Margaret Court, who won 11 Australian Open titles between 1960 and 1973.

Chief among those praising Nadal was defender Ramos.

But once a competive first set went the way of the world number one, the plan became damage limitation and Nadal's "undecima" never looked in any doubt.

Spain's La Liga official account also congratulated the tennis great. Thiem and the man he beat in the quarterfinals, 21-year-old Alexander Zverev of Germany, are the two most well-rounded rising stars in the game.

Others highlighted Nadal's remarkable record at Roland Garros since first winning the title there in 2005.

Sunday marked the first time Nadal had faced a player from a younger tennis generation in a Grand Slam final.

"Not that I did that a year ago, but on grass margins are very slim and it's not so simple, especially when you haven't played for three months".

In full control of the French Open final, a rather familiar position for him, Rafael Nadal suddenly was anxious.

"He's very aggressive, with big shots", Nadal said in halting French before switching to English.

Up in the stands, Nadal's uncle Toni, his former coach, was nervous, too, "because I thought maybe we can have a problem", he said.

In the third and final set against Thiem on Sunday, Nadal called the physio twice to check on his wrist that had been troubling him since the semis.

Nadal also did not win the title in 2016, as he withdrew with an injury before his third-round match. In the other semi-final, Marco Cecchinato's unusual run in the last two weeks was ended by Dominic Thiem, also in straight sets, although the first two sets were somewhat closer than anything Del Potro could muster.

Just like that, Nadal was off on a five-game burst to lead 3-0 in the second set. Between the pair, the two all-time greats have now won the last six Slams.

Nicknamed "Muscles", he first won the French Open at 17 years old in 1953 and took out his second with a win over countryman Rod Laver in 1968. So I just am just going to keep fighting for things and that's it.

A few hours earlier, as Nadal and Thiem warmed up, the booming voice of the announcer at Court Philippe Chatrier detailed the bona fides of both.

Thiem failed to do what Simona Halep had done the other night as Nadal raced away to win the second set as well.

On another day, if the result had been different in 1968, it might have been Laver in Paris presenting Nadal with the trophy. It was Nadal's 60th win in a row on clay.

"For sure, me, I'm confident that this was not my last Grand Slam final, " Thiem said, "and that's my biggest goal: to get into the next one and then to do better than today". He won the tournament again in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
