Scottish National Party leader speaks after Commons walkout

Making a stand SNP leader Ian Blackford in the House of Commons

SNP leader Ian Blackford was the politician given the boot by Speaker John Bercow.

Mr Blackford asked for the House to sit in private but, after being rebuffed by Mr Bercow, he continued his protests.

When Blackford refused to accept this, Bercow repeatedly told him to resume his seat, before calling for the party's Westminster leader to leave.

On Tuesday, British lawmakers had voted to push through Brexit legislation including measures affecting Scotland such as agriculture and fisheries which did not have the consent of Holyrood, the devolved Scottish parliament where the SNP is the biggest party.

He stated: "I really do hope that the people of Scotland listened very carefully to what the prime minister said, because the reality of the situation is that powers enshrined under the Scotland Act 1998 are being grabbed back by this parliament today".

And lodging his protest Mr Blackford blasted: 'This is a power grab and MPs from Scotland were not even given the courtesy of debating it last night.

"The Prime Minister gave a commitment that she would treat Scotland as part of a 'union of equals".

But Theresa May retorted: "We do expect that the outcome of Brexit will be a significant increase in Holyrood power".

The unprecedented event brought PMQs to a temporary halt as Mr Bercow refused his demands.

What had Ian Blackford said?

The suspension prompted all SNP MPs to walk out of Commons chamber, pointing and jeering at Tory MPs. Yet last night she pressed ahead with a power-grab in direct opposition to Scotland's elected Parliament.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted her support of Mr Blackford saying she was "right behind" him and the SNP MPs who walk out of the Commons, adding "Scotland and the Scottish Parliament are being treated with contempt by Westminster and it needs to be highlighted".

Scottish Secretary David Mundell said the SNP was about to be granted a debate on the devolution aspects of the EU Withdrawal Bill by the Government.

Speaking to the BBC immediately after the incident, Mr Blackford said: "Scotland's voice has not been heard, we have had changes to the devolution settlement that were pushed through last night without Scottish MPs voices being heard".

That caused widespread anger north of the border and accusations by the SNP that Prime Minister Theresa May's government is ignoring Scotland.
