Michelin-star Indian chef sacked in Dubai over anti-Islamic tweet

Anti-Muslim tweet How Michelin-star chef Atul Kochhar learned bigotry is bad for business

The popular chef landed in a controversy after he allegedly posted an inflammatory tweet against Priyanka Chopra on Sunday.

Mr Kochhar, 48, the second Indian to receive a Michelin star, is well known for his Rang Mahal restaurant at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, Dubai. Scroll for official statement.

"It's sad to see that you (Priyanka) have not respected the sentiments of Hindus who have been terrorised by Islam over 2000 years".

The Michelin-starred chef operated the award-winning Rang Mahal India restaurant at Dubai's JW Marriot Marquis Hotel.

Claiming that this decision is deeply upsetting, the 48-year-old chef wrote in an emailed statement that, "The decision by JW Marriott Marquis Dubai is deeply upsetting, however, I fully accept the great pain I have caused and the hard position the hotel has been put in", reports Gulf News.

He apologised again on Wednesday after a flood of outraged on social media including threats to boycott his Dubai restaurant and the JW Marriott Marquis hotel that houses it. "We also remain committed to delivering the traditional culinary experience and high service standards that Rang Mahal is renowned for".

"The wedding doesn't count because it was a family affair but other than that, she will pick and choose her engagements". We're likely to see christening photos of the youngest royal any day now and we do love a good photo op.

In his earlier apology, Kochhar had said there was "no justification" for his tweet, which was a "major error made in the heat of the moment".

However, netizens not only lambasted him but also shamed the JW Marriot hotel for employing a "bigot", "anti-Islamic" and "racist" person.

Social media users called for a boycott of Kochhar's restaurants in the UAE and the United Kingdom and restaurant finder app Halal Gems said it was dropping eateries affiliated to the chef from its listings. "I am not Islamophobic, I deeply regret my comments that have offended many", he said in another apology on Twitter. I fully recognise my inaccuracies that Islam was founded around 1,400 years ago and I sincerely apologise. "You knew exactly what you meant as you tweeted that message", another Twitter user added.

However, after being criticised for his hateful comments against Islam and Muslim people, Kochhar had apologised and asked for forgiveness.

"We are aware of the comments made by Chef Atul Kochhar".

The second Indian to win a Michelin star told Gulf News that the hotel's decision was "deeply upsetting" but he accepted the "great pain I have caused and the hard position the hotel has been put in".
