Justify bidding for rare Triple Crown sweep in Belmont

Triple Crown Horse Racing

Justify, who raced to a contested victory at the Belmont States on Saturday evening to clinch the 13th Triple Crown in horse racing history, sparked plenty of euphoria as he crossed the finish.

On a cloudy 80-degree day at Belmont Park, Justify proved a cool customer.

The late bloomer won the Belmont Stakes by 1¾ lengths on Saturday, giving the sport its 13th Triple Crown champion. He's been 5-0 in his brief career, and now he's ready for a chance at a Triple Crown. By today's standards, that is still a lot of racing packed into a relatively short period.

Save for a news helicopter circling during training hours, the scene was as mellow as could be - three years between Triple Crown attempts will have such an effect.

WinStar Farm CEO Elliott Walden has denied that a deal has been made and the New York Times last week reported that it may not be official until September so that Justify's owners can take advantage of tax laws dealing with capital gains. A talented but inexperienced colt, Hofburg finished second to Audible in the Florida Derby on March 31, which was his stakes debut. Remarkably, Justify did not have his first start until February 18th this year and has quickly become the pin-up horse of American racing.

"It is what it is, and I'm really proud of his effort", said Brown, who voiced his frustration that the other jockeys in the race didn't challenge Justify on the front end. "When the half-brother was foaled he was lying in the stall and his legs were so long that I said to Tanya, 'Well, here's one we can't sell'".

Especially considering another Stage Magic offspring, The Lieutenant, won a Grade III race last month, giving the mare two recent graded states winners. Smith faced the pressure of helping Justify take that final step to become the sport's 13th Triple Crown victor.

The auction lasted 20 minutes, which is a long time for that kind of sale, as multiple bidders fought for the ornament.

Justify defied all the odds on his way to achieving Triple Crown immortality. Does Justify's Triple Crown win change that thinking?

Newgate Farm boss Henry Field can't wait for unbeaten Triple Crown victor Justify to stand as a stallion in Australia after watching the colt he helped buy win the Belmont Stakes on Sunday.

Jockey Jose Ortiz rode the rail through the final turn of the 1 1/2-mile test, angled out, and loomed behind Justify, ready to break plenty of hearts. "He's now become a household name, and I'm looking forward to his next race just as much as you guys are".

There were mild bids turning for home.

Baffert will saddle a second horse: 30-1 shot Restoring Hope. You know, I was meant to get this horse.

Trainer Todd Pletcher also has two horses in the field - 8-1 Vino Rosso and 30-1 Noble Indy.

Gronkowski, named for and partly owned by New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, returned $13.80 and $7 in his USA debut after arriving from England.
