Intel Will Enter GPU Market By 2020

Intel will be releasing its first discrete GPU in 2020

Video: Intel promises PC owners smartphone-like battery life.

Last year, it was announced that Raja Koduri would be joining Intel to lead the company's charge into the discrete GPU market.

I've got to say, a 2020 target seems massively ambitious, especially with Raja Koduri, chief architect of its Core and Visual Computing Group, only starting out in his role around six months ago. Thanks to a report by analyst Ryan Shrout, we now know that Intel will begin shipping its next discrete graphics products in 2020.

"Our plan is to introduce high-end discrete graphics solutions for a broad range of computing segments, including both the client and datacenter businesses", Intel added in a statement.

He now heads up Intel's Core and Visual Computing Group, which was formed with his appointment.

Trump ‘can’t jump ahead’ in North Korea negotiations: Leon Panetta
Chung Lee, who is owner of Kim's Korean Restaurant in Spokane, moved to the US from South Korea more than 35 years ago. The move appeared to take USA allies in the region - as well as the country's military - by surprise.

At the same time, Intel is big in the data centre space, so there's a good chance it may just concentrate on GPUs created to put its parallel processing grunt to use in running machine learning and data processing workloads rather than attempting to run Crysis.

Shrout learned of Intel's plans during an analyst briefing conducted by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich and Navin Shenoy, executive vice president of the company's data center group. Intel may still just about hold sway in the CPU market, but they're now a long way behind in the graphics game.

The company has been tapping AMD Radeon GPU designs for its latest processors, so I wonder where the AMD relationship ends with Radeon and Intel when it starts launching its own discrete GPUs.

Intel's new GPU initiative is not its first venture into discrete graphics. Subsequent Intel efforts such as the i752, i754, and Capitola were equally unsuccessful.

The chip, which is smaller than a pencil eraser, could lend itself to dramatic scalability for future computing scenarios. I reported on that in July 2017, where NVIDIA would eventually shift away from making monolithic GPUs and instead use multiple GPU modules, which is far easier on development and would pave the way for a world of truly next-gen cards.
