‘Depressing’: Merkel slams Trump’s ‘withdrawal in tweet’ following G7 summit fallout

German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks to US President Donald Trump during the second day of the G7 meeting in Charlevoix city of La Malbaie Quebec Canada on 9 June

Touching the thorny issue of Germany's relatively low defence spending, Merkel acknowledged that Trump's criticism was partly correct and that Berlin had to do more to reach NATO's goal of spending to 2 percent of economic output on defence.

Germany's interior minister, Horst Seehofer, has cancelled his participation in an integration summit hosted by Angela Merkel amid increasing signs of major disagreements between them over the nation's asylum policy.

West needs Russia's participation in solving worldwide and regional crises, but can not let Moscow join the G7 group of nations without progress in the Minsk process on Ukrainian reconciliation, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an ARD TV broadcast on Sunday.

Seehofer also won support from Italy's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who on Monday flatly refused to allow a rescue vessel carrying hundreds of migrants to dock.

Instead of attending the summit, Seehofer said he would be meeting Austria's chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, who is also pushing for more stringent immigration rules across the European Union but is not fully behind Seehofer's plan to return migrants to the country in which they were first registered.

Merkel objects to turning away asylum seekers at the border, fearing it could lead other countries to do the same.

Ironically though, neighbouring Austria would be hardest hit if Seehofer pushes through his plan to close Germany's doors. She is also trying to persuade other European Union leaders to agree a common migrant policy at a summit this month.

Picture worth a thousand words: Trump, Merkel 'standoff' captures G-7 tensions

"I can not be part of an integration summit where there is one participant who in an article compared my strategy on homeland to the homeland understanding of the Nazis", Seehofer told reporters. Eastern European EU countries also object to a proposal under which migrants would be resettled around the bloc under a quota system.

"The withdrawal by tweet is, of course, sobering and a bit depressing as well", she told Germany's Anne Will talk show on Sunday evening.

Trump, during the summit, insisted that Russian Federation should be a part of the group, leaving many to wonder why the USA president is going out of his way to include Vladimir Putin in the group.

The anti-immigration AfD said Seehofer must prevail.

Merkel's insistence on an EU-wide agreement has the backing for now of the third party in her coalition, the Social Democratic Party.

"Italy is going further than other states: migrants will not be accepted in the ports any more".

"The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before-both in public, and in private conversations with the president", Trudeau's office announced in a statement, according to Reuters.
