American Toddlers Eat So Much 'Added Sugar' That They Exceed Adult Recommendations

Toddlers Consume More 'Added Sugar' Than The Recommended Amount For Adults

Eating foods with added sugar leads to a number of health conditions, including obesity, cavities and possibly heart disease. But how young are most children when the habit starts? While it doesn't actually have a chemical difference from natural sugar in fruits, vegetables, and dairy, the added sugar are reportedly more harmful due to its tendency of displacing nutritional components and adding significant calories to the diet.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that American children are consuming too much "added sugar" before they even reach their first birthday. She presented the findings on Sunday 10 June at Nutrition 2018, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition held in Boston. Ketchup and other condiments are often loaded with added sugar as well.

The researchers explain that foods that contain added sugars are not beneficial for the body as they do not provide the benefits that fruits and vegetables that naturally contain sugars provide.

From run-of-the-mill granulated white sugar to high fructose corn syrup, dietitian Dana Angelo White explained how "these sweeteners are a pure source of carbohydrate and have about 15 calories per teaspoon". CDC report warns that toddlers are facing the highest level of added sugars in their diets - and it will pay off dearly during the life of the generation to come. The earlier patient is introduces to high sugar consumption, the heavier the consequences he or she will face during the life.

A new study suggests children in America are eating too much sugar, and too soon.

Daily recommended limits for added sugar are 6 teaspoons or less a day for children 2 to 19 years old and for adult women, and 9 teaspoons or less a day for adult men. They found that 99 percent of them consumed more than 7 teaspoons of added sugar on an average day - about the same as a full-sized candy bar.

In the future, researchers will investigate the specific foods children consume their added sugar.

Kirsten Herrick, a nutritional epidemiologist at the CDC, examined 24-hour food consumption patterns of a nationally representative sample including more than 800 infants and toddlers aged 6 to 23 months old.

They found that 85 percent of the infants and toddlers consumed added sugar on a given day and that added sugar consumption rose with age.
