USA unveils new Russian Federation sanctions over cyberattacks

US sanctions new Russian entities over cyberattacks

Russia's "malign and destabilizing cyber activities" included the NotPetya attack a year ago that spread across Europe, Asia and the Americas, attacks on the USA energy grid and on network infrastructure including routers and switches, the Treasury statement said.

The Treasury Department said it was imposing sanctions on five Russian firms and three of their executives under legislation passed past year and an executive order aimed at punishing efforts to hack into USA computer systems. "Russia has been active in tracking undersea communication cables, which carry the bulk of the world's telecommunications data".

United States officials have become alarmed over the past year at the extent of US-targeted offensive cyber operations that Washington alleges have official backing from Moscow.

None of the sanctioned parties were immediately able to respond to Sky News for comment.

These sanctions freeze assets of the targeted businesses and individuals that they may have in the country and also prohibit Americans from engaging in transactions with these designated organizations and individuals. All three individuals added to the SDN list have been targeted by the USA sanctions due to their links to the Divetechnoservice Company, the Russian diving-equipment producer, according to the Treasury.
