France, Germany slam Trump's G7 statement U-turn

Merkel-Trump G7 face-off photo headed for history books

The G7 summit is coming down to the wire. We have seen this with the climate agreement or the Iran deal.

The German leader also reiterated that said she is not ready to "give up on G7" but at the same time would seek dialogue with Russian Federation and try to "work very closely" with Japan, Canada, India and China.

The photo shared by Merkel's office on Saturday was simply captioned "Day two of the G7 summit in Canada: spontaneous meeting between two working sessions".

Trump left the meeting between the world's leading industrialized countries with a warning to USA allies, saying that if they don't remove trade barriers with the US then they will face consequences.

Germany, Europe's top economy, finds itself in the sights of the U.S. president due to its large trade surplus and defence spending criticised as too low by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Trudeau, who announced that the G7 had issued a joint communique, had to suffer the wrath of Trump.

Taika Waititi Is Hitler In First Photo From 'Jojo Rabbit'
In the latter, he added the caption, "What better way to insult Hitler than having him portrayed by a Polynesian Jew? ".

Nearly 18 months into Trump's presidency, Merkel's comments offered renewed evidence of Germany's struggle to adapt to an upended relationship with the US.

Merkel said she will keep talking with Trump., but renewed her call for Europe to take a more forceful role in global affairs and said the European Union won't be "take for a ride" in its trade conflict with the US. Russian Federation used to be included rounding out the group to G8, Trump has been lobbying for the country to be let back in.

The European leader-famed for negotiating compromise without political histrionics-gave an uncharacteristically candid and combative assessment of relations with Trump as she spoke to German channel ARD, after last week's G-7 summit. While she could imagine such a scenario in the future, Moscow would first have to make real progress on a viable peace plan for the country, she said.

Merkel described the joint communiqué Trump refused to sign, despite America's co-authorship, as "arduously negotiated".

After leaving the summit Saturday, Trump announced that the USA was pulling back its endorsement of the G7 communique in part because of what he called "false statements" at a news conference by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "Maybe we can help", in a tart reference to alleged collusion between Russian President Vladimir Putin's government and the Trump team to influence the United States presidential election.

Although Trump and Kudlow have since claimed Trudeau "stabbed us in the back" and was the reason for the U-turn, it is Trump's actions that other G7 leaders appeared to find frustrating.
