Trump vows to deal with 'unfair trade' ahead of tense G7 summit

Europe, Canada and Japan are largely united in opposition to Trump's protectionism while trying to find ways to bridge the divide and avoid rupturing the G7, which in its 42-year history has tended to seek consensus on economic and other issues.

The Trudeau government has threatened to impose up to 12.8 billion U.S.dollars in tariffs against American steel, aluminum and other products - ranging from coffee and candy to toilet paper and tablecloths - to take effect on July 1, unless the Trump administration withdrew its 25-percent tariff on Canadian steel imports and a 10-percent tariff on imports of Canadian aluminum.

The summit of the Group of 7 nations began on Friday in Canada.

"We're going to deal with the unfair trade practices". Canada has proposed levies on a range of USA goods next month and the European Union has pledged its own retaliatory measures.

Trump set the tone before leaving Washington on Friday. On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted about President Trump's "isolation" and said the other members of the Group of Seven would be ready to sign a six-country agreement "if need be".

In response, the Canadian official replied that "the prime minister and the president have very frank, direct, candid, honest conversations".
