Talks on N Korea summit 'going very well'

President Donald Trump speaks about North Korea before signing the

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to "complete" denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Sunday. It allowed Moon to push for a US-North Korean summit that he sees as the best way to ease animosity that had some fearing a war a year ago.

Meanwhile, Trump spoke to reporters about the potential summit from the Oval Office on Saturday night, where he had gathered with lawmakers to celebrate the return of Utah man Joshua Holt, who had been jailed in Venezuela for almost two years and finally freed.

The meeting came hours after South Korea expressed relief over revived talks for a summit between Trump and Kim.

At the White House, Mr Trump said negotiations over a potential June 12 summit with Kim that he had earlier cancelled are "going along very well".

"It's moving along very nicely", Trump said at the White House during a meeting with a USA prisoner freed by Venezuela. So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore.

Trump added: "We'll see what happens".

Kim "once again committed to complete denuclearisation", Moon said.

The main dispute between the US and North Korea boils down to how fast Kim should give up his weapons, and what he'll get in return.

Video and a photo released by South Korea's presidential Blue House on Saturday showed Mr. Kim hugging Mr. Moon and kissing him on the cheek three times as he saw Mr. Moon off after their meeting at Tongilgak, the North's building in the truce village, which lies in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) - the 2.5-mile (4 km) wide buffer that runs along the heavily armed military border.

Trump rattled the region on Thursday by cancelling his June 12 meeting with Kim in the Southeast Asian city-state, citing "open hostility" from Pyongyang.

Moon said he wished to hold a three-way summit with Trump and Kim should their upcoming bilateral summit succeed.

The unexpected summit - the second between Kim and Moon in as many months - reflects urgency among both men to maintain momentum for diplomacy.

The White House said Trump dictated the letter himself.

The latest meeting was carried out at Kim's initiative, Moon revealed, saying that the North Korean leader reached out with the idea the day before, on Friday.

In his letter, Trump responded, referencing US nuclear capabilities "so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used".

Trump emphasized that sanctions and "the maximum pressure campaign will continue" to be applied on North Korea, while expressing hope Pyongyang's leadership would decide to join the community of nations. The president did not call South Korea's Moon or Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to inform them of it, White House officials confirmed.
