Texas, Austin Suburbs Lead The Nation In Population Growth (Again)

Austin had the 12th largest population increase between 2016 and 2017 adding 12,515 people

You've probably heard some fed-up folks grumbling about leaving the city - and now some businesses, too, in the fallout from our controversial new head tax on large companies.

The U.S. Census Bureau released new population figures for U.S. cities on Thursday, and they show that Seattle has toppled Austin, Texas, to become the nation's fastest-growing big city this decade.

The county's rate of growth trailed the 49-percent rate of Williams County of North Dakota as the top-ranked county in the country.

The Lone Star State also dominated the 15 most-populated US cities as of July 2017, with an estimated 2.3 million residents in Houston, which ranked fourth overall behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. The Texas capital, which has seen growth cool down a bit recently, falls to second place.

This is not the first time McKinney has been on the list of fastest-growing cities. The Chicago metropolitan area, which extends from the city to its suburbs and into parts of IN and Wisconsin, also has lost residents for three consecutive years. The estimate of the county's population has been dropping since 2013. That year, New Orleans added nearly 39,000 residents as people started going back home after Hurricane Katrina. The cities with the largest increase between July 2016 and July 2017 include San Antonio, Dallas and Forth Worth - while the top five fastest growing cities include three Texas names as well.

Two other High Desert cities also hit milestones a year ago, according to the new Census Bureau figures.

Brookhaven Town, the county's most populous, saw a decline of 591, or -0.12 percent. "If we're capped at 2 1/2 percent growth, we can't do things like that". With an estimated population of 70,441, North Richland HIlls remained the third-largest city in Tarrant County. In 2012, the only major city with negative growth was Detroit.

Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors, said Texas and Arizona cities have gained population because of relatively low home prices and relatively strong job creation that he attributes to low-tax policies drawing more employers. When looking at percentage change, 10 of the 15 fastest-growing large cities were located in the South, the bureau said.

One factor, based on earlier census releases, is that more people have been moving out of New York City and Los Angeles, making it harder for those cities to maintain population growth just through births and immigration.
