Memorial Day events scheduled in Helena area

Air Force veteran Roger Menchofer is this year's special speaker and music and song will be provided by the Hayes family and Greg Jones. Meet at 9 a.m.at Arms Trucking, 14818 Mayfield Road in East Claridon.

The members of the American Legion Post 423 will conduct Memorial Day services at noon Monday, May 28, in front of the Post on Legion Road. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m.; all township veterans, are invited to meet at 8:30 a.m.at the church to ride on a float in the parade; 330-402-5655. Following a brief ceremony at the veterans memorial near the high school, the parade will go along OH 60 to the Beverly Cemetery where a memorial ceremony will be held for the veterans buried in the cemetery. Any groups who wish to participate are welcome.

1 p.m., Services at Greenmount Cemetery in Arendtsville. There will be a flag raising ceremony, followed by guest speaker David Brainard, a US Navy veteran and the Pastor of Frist Southern Baptist Church in Pomeroy. The road to the cemetery closes at 9:30 a.m. and stays closed through the ceremony. Parade marshal is Vietnam War Navy veteran Leroy Jansky.

Prior to the indoor service, there will be an 8:30 a.m. service at South Newbury Cemetery followed by a service at Munn Cemetery at 9 a.m.

All events take place Monday, May 28 unless otherwise noted. There will not be a service Saturday.

Newbury American Legion Post 663 and Commander Ken Hunter will host Memorial Day services at 10:30 a.m.in the Newbury School Auditorium. Special music will be provided by Reese and Diane Livergood's grandson, Noah Carr.

In Parkersburg, American Legion Post 15 will begin its day with the posting of the colors at 8 a.m. Monday at the post headquarters at 2505 Ohio Ave.in the traffic circle.

- The Korean War Veterans of Hudson County will be honoring all veterans tomorrow at the Korean War Monument at Washington and Dudley Street at 10 a.m.

The American Legion Musconetcong Post 278 will conduct a Memorial Day Parade at 1 p.m. This year's program will be 10 a.m. Military rites by Biglerville American Legion Post 262.

The AMVETS Memorial Day Parade will be held this Saturday, May 26, in downtown Point Pleasant. The service is sponsored by the Grassflat/Lanse Cemetery Board. Those attending the ceremonies are encouraged to bring a single, non-perishable food item which will be donated to area veterans by the Zion Lutheran Church Veterans Food Bank. Refreshments will be served after the ceremonies at the post home. In the case of inclement weather, services will be held in Oval United Methodist Church.

- The nonprofit group Philippine Plaza will host a Memorial Day event on Sunday at Philippine Plaza, at the corner of Manila Avenue and Second Street, dedicated to Philippine-American veterans of all wars.

Two ceremonies in Parkersburg will be held Saturday, while Sunday will feature two programs in Ravenswood. The parade units will stop for a few minutes on the Beverly-Waterford Bridge while a wreath and flowers are thrown in the river to honor naval veterans. The rides are available from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

Jersey Shore Veterans Council Inc. will hold a lost-at-sea service at 6 a.m. Monday at the Route 44 bridge.

The schedule is: 9 a.m.at Lower Hyner Cemetery, 9:15 at Hyner Catholic Cemetery, 9:30 at Chapman Township Fire Hall at North Bend, 9:45 at North Bend Cemetery, 10 a.m.at Fairview Cemetery.

A Memorial Day service will be held Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m.at the All Veterans Monument at Osceola Mills.

The Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum in Carson Park is open from 10 a.m.to 4:30 p.m.
