Italy president summons Conte, possibly paving way for PM appointment

Five Star and the anti-migrant League have named Giuseppe Conte a little-known professor as their choice for prime minister

Di Maio himself may be back in the running for the premiership, the official said.

The New York Times earlier today questioned Conte's curriculum vitae, which says that he stayed from 2008 to 2012, every summer and "for periods of not less than a month, at New York University, to ideal and update his studies". Media reports have also speculated that he padded his resume and overstated his academic credentials. "He never cited lessons or masters degrees attended at that university".

The 12-page resume Conte submitted to the Italian parliament in 2013 stated he "perfected and up to date his research" at NYU in the course of the summers of 2008-2014.

Tsai stated within the assertion: "Whereas Mr. Conte had no official standing at NYU, he was granted permission to conduct analysis within the NYU legislation library...and he invited an NYU legislation professor to serve on the board of an Italian legislation journal".

Mr Conte "never boasted" of holding degrees from foreign universities, but "stayed overseas to study, enrich his knowledge and ideal his juridical English".

Cambridge declined to verify any affiliation, citing privateness, and the Sorbonne and New York College did not instantly reply to queries.

The resume also says Conte studied at the International Kultur Institut in Vienna in 1993.

A presidential source said before summoning the little-known law professor, Mattarella had contacted the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and the far-right Northern League to receive confirmation that he remained their choice for prime minister. "For a professor of his level, the opposite would have been odd", the movement said.

After more than two months of political deadlock and amid market concerns that Europe's third-largest economy is taking a populist plunge, the office of President Sergio Mattarella announced Conte had been summoned for a meeting Wednesday afternoon. "I feel like he's walking in the lion's den with Salvini and Di Maio, but we'll see".
