Nepal confirms death of two foreign climbers on Mount Everest

Two foreign climbers die while scaling world's highest peak, say Nepalese officials

The 2015 season was scrapped after 19 climbers were killed and 61 injured by an avalanche at the base camp triggered by a massive quake.

Macedonian climber, Gjeorgi Petkov, 62, died over the weekend near camp 3 at 7,200 meters above sea level, said Gyanendra Shrestha, a Tourism Ministry official at Everest base camp. Kuriki, 35, had failed in seven previous attempts to climb the 29,000-foot mountain with a plan which doesn't include oxygen.

Reuters reported that it was Kuriki's eighth attempt at climbing the mountain.

"The climber was found dead in his tent on Camp III (7,200m)", said Tikaram Gurung, Managing Director at Bochi Bochi Treks, the organiser of his expedition.

Some 340 foreign climbers and their Sherpa guides are attempting to scale Everest this month and many succeeded in the past week during good weather.

Before his final summit push on Monday morning, Mr. Kuriki, 36, had updated his social media accounts to say that he was suffering from a cough and fever but that he thought he could continue climbing.

The company which organised Kuriki's expedition said arrangements were being made for his body to be returned to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.

"I feel the pain and difficulty of this mountain", a post said. He lost most of his fingers due to frostbite during an unsuccessful attempt in 2012.

The climber's body was flown to Kathmandu for an autopsy, according to Sapkota.

He first scaled Everest at age 24, and has made the climb nearly every year since then. A Russian climber died of altitude sickness in a bid to climb Lhotse, bordering Everest. Second image: Nobukazu poses with Nepalese flag after speaking engagement.
