Cougar Kills Mountain Biker In Washington State, Injures Companion

Experts Say There Was

SJ Brooks, 32, was killed and Isaac Sederbaum, 31, was seriously injured by the mountain lion on Sunday.

The tragedy took place in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in North Bend, Washington, near Seattle.

Wildlife officials said it was only the second fatal cougar attack in Washington state in the past 100 years. Cougars are a protected species there.

"Humans are not on the menu for cougars normally", Myers told The Washington Post.

Males that age typically weigh upward of 140 pounds, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife website.

Myers said the carcass of the cougar was transported Sunday to Washington State University in Pullman, where a veterinarian will conduct a brain necropsy to determine if the cougar was sick.

Sgt. Abbott said it took rescuers about 30 minutes to locate the second victim, who was found dead with the cougar standing over top of him.

Brooks was bitten in the face, legs and neck, and Sederbaum's injuries included bite and tear marks and claw scratches on his head, neck and face, Myers said.

Fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare in North America, with only about two dozen recorded in the last 100 years, a lot of them involving children. "What we've learned is with wolves, cougars, and coyotes is actually killing them has the opposite effect, it throws them in what scientists refer to as social chaos".

"He said he had his whole entire head in the jaws of this animal and was being shaken around horribly", Myers said.

If you encounter a cougar, don't run - because the animal's instinct is to chase. His condition was later upgraded to satisfactory, The Seattle Times reported.

Abbott said the area is known for cougar sightings, but the attack was extremely rare. In North America, there have been about 25 deadly attacks and 95 nonfatal attacks reported in the past century, but more attacks have been reported in the U.S. West and Canada over the past 20 years than in the previous 80, according to Fish and Wildlife.

The rider who died was dragged away by the cougar to its den, said King County sheriff spokesman Sergeant Ryan Abbot.

The King County Sheriff's Office tweeted at about 4 p.m. local time that officials had tracked the cougar and it had been killed. "This was an animal that was not healthy, and in its last attempts to try to survive did something it ordinarily wouldn't".
