Zuckerberg accepts European Union parliament grilling over data scandal

Zuckerberg will appear before European Parliament on Tuesday

As previously reported "FACTS", on Wednesday, the speaker of the EP, Antonio Tania reported that Zuckerberg accepted the invitation to come in the EP. Meeting due to the fact that, according to the newspaper The New York Times, collaborated with the President of the United States Donald trump during the election campaign, the firm Cambridge Analytica illegally obtained data, more than 87 million users of Facebook.

That's even though Facebook has admitted that of the 2.7 million European users who could be affected by the Cambridge Analytica scandal, over one million of them could be in the UK. Many in the European Parliament had been calling for a public hearing.

"Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation", Tajani said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Last month, Zuckerberg agreed to public sessions with USA lawmakers, following a major global privacy scandal related to user data and political ad targeting.

The whistle-blower who revealed how Cambridge Analytica harvested Facebook Inc. user data to target election ads said the company could have shared that information with Russian Federation.

"I will not attend the meeting with Mr Zuckerberg if it's held behind closed doors", Verhofstadt tweeted.

While Zuckerberg testified last month to the U.S. Congress, he had always been noncommittal on his appearance in Europe, sending his chief technical officer to speak to the British parliament and delaying confirmation of any visit to Brussels.

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors.

The EU Justice Commissioner also wants a public hearing.

Zuckerberg's Brussels visit comes just days ahead when European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into play on May 25. "It is a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence".

A DCMS committee spokesperson confirmed no formal summons has been issued to Zuckerberg to date, although Vote Leave campaign director Dominic Cummings, and former Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix - both embroiled in the burgeoning scandal over the alleged misuse of data in political campaigns - were subject to formal summons.

"Although Facebook says Mr Zuckerberg has no plans to travel to the United Kingdom, we would also be open to taking his evidence by video link, if that would be the only way to do this during the period of our inquiry", committee chairman, Damian Collins writes in a letter to Facebook.
