White House calls deaths in Gaza 'propaganda' by Hamas

Palestinian demonstrators run for cover from Israeli fire and tear gas during a protest against the U.S. embassy's move to Je

NBC's Peter Alexander asked White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah Monday about the violence Monday at the Gaza strip in response to the moving of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel.

Shah says that "Israel has the right to defend itself" and is blaming Hamas for the "dire situation".

Britain has no plans to move its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and still disagrees with the USA decision to do so, Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said on Monday.

President Trump fulfilled a campaign promise with the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem.

President Donald Trump had announced the embassy move on 6 December, which immediately sparked violent protests.

The violence made it the deadliest day in Gaza since the devastating cross-border war between the territory's Hamas rulers and Israel four years ago. "America stands with Israel!"

White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah is expected to hold a briefing at 2:00 p.m. ET today.

"The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas", Shah said, noting that the administration was aware of the "reports of continued violence in Gaza".
