Theresa May's £400m to rid fire-risk tower blocks of cladding

Grenfell disaster probe 'finds race to the bottom' in buildings safety practices

Unsafe cladding on 158 tower blocks will replaced in the next two years, Theresa May announced today as she promised the Government would bear the cost of the work.

The state's housing and public works minister, Mick de Brenni, has told the ABC that while it would cost millions to complete rectifications, the government could not put a price on safety.

She told MPs: 'Councils and housing associations must remove unsafe cladding quickly but paying for these works must not undermine their ability to do important maintenance and fix work'.

More than 12,000 buildings in Australia's Queensland state are set to be inspected for flammable cladding, as part of a major audit following a London building fire last June that killed more than 70 people, according to the latest report of a taskforce looking into the matter.

Theresa May made her announcement during prime minister's questions after being asked for an update on the work done by the government to ensure that tower blocks are safe.

Housing secretary James Brokenshire said the community would feel "disappointed and let down" as he expressed his own concerns about the speed of the rehousing programme, saying it was "clearly not good enough".

She said there were 210 households in total in need of a new home in the wake of the fire, of which 201 had accepted an offer of either temporary or permanent accommodations.

He said he was "establishing at pace what further action can be done by the government or by the council to speed up this process".
