Nigeria's population to rise 189 million between 2018 and 2050

Delhi will be world’s most populous city by 2028 says UN report

TWO out of every three people will live in cities by 2050, giving rise to the creation of megacities predominantly in China, India and Nigeria, according to a United Nations report released Wednesday. Tokyo, with 37 million people, is now the most populated city, followed by New Delhi with 29 million, Shanghai with 26 million and Mexico City and Sao Paulo, each with around 22 million dwellers. Currently, the world is home to 31 megacities - the largest of which is Tokyo with an agglomeration of 37 million inhabitants - but the report estimates that by 2030, the world could have 43, the majority of which will be in developing countries.

Most of this growth is expecting to be concentrated in just a handful of countries.

Speaking at a United Nations news conference, he said:"Managing urban growth to insure that it is sustainable has become one of the most important development challenges of the current century".

"By 2020, Tokyo's population is projected to begin to decline, while Delhi is projected to continue growing and to become the most populous city in the world around 2028", it said.

By 2030, the world is projected to have 43 megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants, a lot of them in developing regions.

Mexico City and São Paulo, come next; each with around 22 million inhabitants.

Currently, Asia is home to 54 percent of the world's urban population, though levels of urbanization are considered to be low in the region. In related news, cities like Nagasaki and Busan have experienced a significant decline in their population since the start of the 21st century.

The report also projected that the world's population itself will peak in a few years and decline by 2050. India already has five megacities, with populations in excess of 10 million people: New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. Also, urbanisation will play a huge role as there will be a gradual shift in the residence of the human population from rural to urban areas in Asia and Africa.

"However, the challenge is that in many countries it's taking place so rapidly. and large slum areas have developed that are not maybe achieving the goals of sustainable development the way that we would like".

Population Division director John Wilmoth said: "When urban growth is rapid, insuring access to housing, water, sanitation, electricity, public transport, education and health care for all is especially challenging".

The report added that linkages between urban and rural areas would need to be strengthened, building on their existing economic, social and environmental ties.
