Instagram to warn users if they spend too much time on the app

The feature was first discovered by app investigator Jane Manchun Wong via code hidden inside Instagram's Android application package, which shows the Usage Insights tool that will disclose the "time spent" on the platform.

Now, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has taken to Twitter to confirm that the Usage Insights feature is indeed real and that it will be coming to all users at some point in the future.

Systrom says Instagram wants the time spent within the app to be "positive and intentional".

It was reported yesterday that there's an unannounced "Usage Insights" feature in Instagram's Android app which will enable users to keep track of the time that they spend on the social network. He also says tech companies need to be honest with users about the time they're spending online.

But phone addiction is becoming an increasingly troubling phenomenon. A 2017 study released by analytics firm Flurry showed the average U.S. user spends five hours a day on their device, a 20 percent year-over-year increase. Studies show those who depend on their smartphones have worse anxiety, increased stress, and a higher risk of depression. This feature is known as "Usage Insight" and is now hidden.
