Indian Gaming Commission Responds To SCOTUS Decision On Sports Betting

Dennis Drazin | Patty Wolfe

The Reverend Mark Creech of the Christian Action League said in a statement released Tuesday that he believed the Supreme Court's decision allows states to engage in "the fleecing of their own citizens". Legalized sports betting nationwide could provide $3.4 billion to states and local governments, according to a study by Oxford Economics commissioned by the American Gaming Association.

But, for that to happen, each state will have to authorize it statutorily.

The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling Monday that takes the shackles off state-sanctioned sports betting has profound implications beyond legal recreational betting and increased state tax revenue. The new CT law allows state officials "to regulate wagering on sporting events to the extent permitted by state and federal law".

Drazin says that there is apparently a bill in the state Legislature that would regulate sports betting in New Jersey, so he is going to wait on allowing bets.

We discuss what the ruling means on all sides of the issue.

"State leaders need to be prepared to tell the truth about the economic predation of casino gambling", he told Baptist Press in written comments.

That ruling strikes down a federal ban in place since 1992 that restricts sports betting for most states.

The American Gaming Association (AGA), which represents the USA casino industry, has long opposed the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, contending it has resulted in an annual illegal sports betting market of $150 billion.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito delivered the majority opinion, being joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas, Elena Kagan, and Neil Gorsuch.
