Earlier this week, some very committed fans of Fortnite Battle Royale dug into the game's files and uncovered content that seemed to suggest that a competitive game mode is on the way.

Epic Games has revealed that the new limited-time mode will be a way for them to learn how to host more similar events in the future "for all types of players".

Solo Showdown places players against self-selected competitors in "the ultimate test of survival".

Place between 50 and 5 and you'll get 13,500 V-bucks, while fourth, third and second place get 25,000 and the victor gets a whopping 50,000.

This could mean that the best players are removed from the standard run of the game, making for a different experience lower down.

Unlike other Limited Time Modes that have previously been added to the game, Solo Showdown "will not change core gameplay of the current Solo mode", says Epic. Given that lots more new skins and cosmetics are headed to the game, Solo Showdown's top 100 will have plenty of ways to spend their winnings.

Karnataka: BJP MLAs elect Yeddyurappa leader of its legislative party
One of the BJP MLAs had said Yeddyurappa will take oath as chief minister on Thursday, much before it was confirmed officially. He argued that the matter should not have been heard at this hour and it was "absolutely wrong" to do so.

The standings will be continually updated throughout the duration of the event on the blog.

But the prizes aren't the most exciting thing about Solo Showdown. Epic is teasing a big competitive announcement for next week. Epic Games hasn't confirmed anything about this so far which means that we'll have to wait in order to find out whether or not Fortnite is actually getting a competitive mode. You'll need to be 16 or over to take part, and you'll need to play all 50 matches to be eligible for a prize. You have to play at least 50 matches to be eligible, and only your first 50 will be counted to your score.

The new mode is going on from now until May 21st at 10 AM ET.
