The driver of a Tesla Model S sedan was traveling at 60 miles (97 km) per hour when it smashed into a fire truck stopped at a red light about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City on Friday night, according to police.
"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the (approximately) 40,000 people who died in USA auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", Musk said in a tweet.
"Drivers are repeatedly advised Autopilot features do not make Tesla vehicles "autonomous" and that the driver absolutely must remain vigilant with their eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and they must be prepared to take any and all action necessary to avoid hazards on the road", the report read.

The NTSB is also investigating a Tesla Model Scrash that left two people dead and another injured in Florida.
The "superior" rating which Model 3 has achieved for IIHS' front crash prevention tests is the same as the rating already achieved by Tesla's Model S and Model X electric vehicles. The driver also said she was looking at her phone prior to the collision, police said.
Contrary to the proper use of Autopilot, the driver did not pay attention to the road at all times, did not keep her hands on the steering wheel, and she used it on a street with no center median and with stoplight controlled intersections. After a fatal Tesla Model X crash on Highway 101 in Mountain View in March, Tesla reported that the driver of that auto had been warned repeatedly during the trip to put his hands on the wheel, and that his hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds before the collision. Both incidents were in California.
This is the latest investigation by federal regulators into recent accidents involving Tesla vehicles. Autopilot was not thought to play a part.
The report also confirmed that the NHTSA sent an investigating team to look into the crash, but it will be conducted by the Special Crash Investigations Team, which gathers data on "special crashes" to help the automotive safety community.
Tesla said that the driver in the Mountain View crash did not heed repeated warnings from the auto to resume control of the vehicle.
