Two Nepalese Sherpas break world records with Mount Everest climb

Nepalese mountaineer Lhakpa Sherpa prepares to leave for an expedition to Everest in Kathmandu

A Nepali Sherpa guide climbed Mt. Everest for a record 22nd time Wednesday, officials said.

Mountaineering has been his family tradition. The next most accomplished female Everest climber is American Melissa Sue Arnot, who has reached the top six times. In her early days, she would help climbers by cooking form them and worked as a porter before she trained as a climber.

The first summit wave happened Monday when some 50 mountaineers and Sherpa guides scaled it. His brother has scaled Everest 17 times.

He completed the seven climbs in 177 days - nine days quicker than the previous record - after reaching the top of Everest on Monday (May 14).

Kami Rita first climbed Everest as a 24-year-old in 1994. He has climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 metres which include K2, Cho-oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna.

The other two previous summit record-holders are also Sherpas.

Although Sherpa was scheduled to climb the world's tallest peak on Thursday, he achieved the feat a day before, surprising all his mountaineering colleagues and officials.

Summits are underway every day since May 13 after the eight rope-fixing team members opened the climbing route for all climbers.
