Samsung shows interest in selling Exynos chipsets to ZTE and other OEMs

Samsung to Announce New Customer for their Exynos Processors in 2019; New Client Maybe ZTE Mobiles

Beleaguered Chinese networking equipment and smartphone maker ZTE is reportedly in talks with Samsung Electronics over sourcing the company's Exynos mobile microprocessors.

According to Reuters, Samsung is only in talks with ZTE at this moment for supply of its Exynos chipsets.

Samsung has made it no secret that it is looking to supply its Exynos processors to other manufacturers in order to increase profits.

ZTE has recently been subject to a trade ban from the US, meaning it can no longer use chips made by Qualcomm.

Samsung is far behind Qualcomm and Apple in mobile SoC production, but the solution to use in-house chips helped the company grow its smartphone business, including a 27% rise in shipments for System LSI. He confirmed that new clients can be unveiled as early as the first half of 2019. Inyup Kang said that Samsung will continue to negotiate with ZTE regardless of the outcome of trade negotiations between the USA and China.

Samsung is negotiating with several smartphone manufacturers, including ZTE, the supply of mobile processors. This includes their Exynos brand of processors, which are used on tablets and smartphones. It said in January that it is providing automaker Audi with Exynos processor chips.

"We are talking to all OEMs", said Inyup Kang, the head of Samsung's logic chip developer, System LSI, in an interview with the newswire.

Samsung's semiconductor business, reporting a 2017 operating profit of 35.2 trillion won ($33 billion), contributed more than 65 percent of the whole firm's record annual profit of 53.65 trillion won a year ago.

Kang said his business is expected to see a 5-10 percent revenue growth this year in dollar terms.
