Kent State' graduate's photo with AR-10 goes viral

Student celebrates graduation by taking huge AR-10 rifle to university

"I wanted to draw attention to the gun policies on campus that allow guests to open carry, but not students", she said.

"Now that I graduated from Kent State, I can finally arm myself on campus", Bennett wrote in the post. The photo is made more dramatic because the gun, held vertically, is nearly as tall as Bennett.

"After graduation, she joined the ranks of our proud graduates", Mansfield said.

Kent State University graduate, Kaitlin Bennett, 22, caused a stir on social media with her photo, in which she is seen walking on campus, while carrying an AR-10 long rifle on her back.

It's possible some of Bennett's classmates were uneasy with the firearm glorification, considering Kent State was the epicenter of one of the most culturally significant shootings in history when unarmed students were shot by the Ohio National Guard in 1970, resulting in 4 deaths and 9 injuries, during a protest of the Vietnam War.

In another tweet, she railed against critics who referred to her AR-10 as an "assault rifle". The message Bennett chose: "Come and take it", referring to her gun.

Bennett says her main motivation for the photo was in response to pushback she received for organizing an on-campus open carry walk to promote gun control.

"It's a bad ass photo", she grinned. The university told Refinery29 that Bennett, now that she's a graduate, is within her rights to openly carry her rifle. "The black officer that was with us during this photoshoot loved it, actually".

According to its website, the university has rules against students, faculty, and staff carrying any "deadly weapons". Where do you stand? "Kent became an open-carry campus in the a year ago and there were many protests from that, the incident of May 4 not forgotten".

"As a woman, I refuse to be a victim and the second amendment ensures that I don't have to be", Bennett said in a tweet.
