Dust storm hits Delhi-NCR

More thunderstorms headed North India's way

A heavy dust storm with a wind speed of 98 kilometres per hour accompanied by squall hit Delhi-NCR during the wee hours today. The storm struck the national capital and nearby regions around 3 AM on May 16.

The high-velocity winds resulted in several trees being uprooted and also brought down many electric poles causing power outages in the capital city.

As many as 80 died in five states due to thunderstorms and lightning strikes since Sunday, with Uttar Pradesh alone recording 51 deaths. Reports of disruptions in power supply were received from parts of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Karol Bagh among others.

India's meteorological department Wednesday issued a fresh warning of thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds in the national capital and its outskirts.

Earlier on Tuesday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted severe weather conditions in several parts of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

In Andhra Pradesh state in the south, at least 12 people were killed by lightning, said M.V. Sheshagiri Babu, the state's relief commissioner.
