Chevy Corvette ZR1 will pace the Indy 500

Chevrolet Unveils Corvette ZR1 2018 Indy 500 Pace Car

Chevrolet itself has 29 pace-car-shaped notches on its headboard, extending all the way back to 1948.

The Indianapolis 500 is getting back-to-back Corvette pace cars. Of course, the new 'Vette is more than just an engine - it has the full complement of aero and suspension to make this a true track star.

"It's the flawless choice to pace "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing"," said Steve Majoros, Marketing Director for Cars and Crossovers at Chevy. The 2019 Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful Corvette to ever set the race's pace, and it's the most powerful pace vehicle to ever run at Indy. "It's the ideal choice to pace 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing'".

For a very long time, the Indy 500 pace auto routinely shift from one company to another, but the last time that a non-General Motors product led the field was back in 1996 when a Dodge Viper was the official Indy pace vehicle. The ZR1's participation means that it will be the 15th Corvette to pace the Indy 500.

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is on sale now. In 1920, Gaston Chevrolet won the Indy 500.

Louis Chevrolet and his brothers came to America to race.

The ZR1 and 14 other Corvette pace cars were on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier this week in recognition of the nameplate's legacy.

The Corvette ZR1 Pace Car can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 2.85 seconds and reach a top track speed of 212 miles per hour, the fastest Corvette in history.

The automaker is also proud to point out that one of its founders, Arthur Chevrolet, competed in the first 500-mile race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1911.

The 102nd Indy 500 will be run on Sunday, May 27th 2018 and the race will be broadcast on ABC.
