Facebook could start designing its own chips

Facebook is seeking to get a manager to make and full SOC/ASIC, firmware, and driver development organization.

Facebook is planning to assemble a team to design its own semiconductors chips by joining with other tech giants that have recently invested in building their own chips.

Apple, for example, builds its own chips, which makes it better able to control the features it releases, as well as its timeline for introducing new devices.

Reports say these chips could be used to power hardware devices, AI software and servers for its data centres. Next month, the company will launch the Oculus Go, a $200 standalone virtual-reality headset that runs on a Qualcomm processor.

We already know that Facebook has shelved plans for a smart speaker, but it's only a matter of time until it comes back around and, this time, could be powered by Facebook's own silicon. Alphabet Inc.'s Google has developed its own artificial intelligence chip as well. That product has now been delayed amid Facebook's ongoing privacy scandals, but future versions of it could use Facebook's own chips.

Facebook declined to comment on the job postings. The main functions of most smartphones are provided by SOCs. As the processor progress is slowing, some companies are turning to custom processors called ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) or to adaptable chips called FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) that can be tuned to speed up specific tasks.

On the other hand, another Facebook AI researcher Yann LeCun tweeted about a different role of making chips for AI objective and pointed out at a different job listing.
