United Kingdom admits 'horrendous' mistakes over 'Windrush' immigrants denied rights

Named the Windrush generation after British ship the Empire Windrush, which arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex with 492 Caribbean passengers in 1948, "many have made the United Kingdom their home for their entire lives", says the Channel 4 News website.

But, despite having lived in the country for the majority of their lives, the group of British residents have begun to experience issues as a result of tightened United Kingdom immigration requirements.

The announcement came amid growing anger about individuals facing the threat of deportation and being denied access to healthcare due to United Kingdom paperwork issues and anomalies affecting some immigrants who arrived between the late 1940s and early 1970s.

But who are the Windrush generation and why are they facing deportation?

She told Channel 4 News: "Potentially they have been and I'm very conscious that it's very much in error, and that's an error that I want to put right". I think we have to reflect this goes way back to the 1970s.

"And 40, 50 years on are being told by the Home Office not that they are just anomalies, but they are illegal immigrants".

Unless they are able to produce documents confirming their right to live in the United Kingdom, the Home Office has threatened them with deportation.

HOME SECRETARY Amber Rudd has apologised for the treatment of the Windrush generation, saying it was "wrong" and "appalling" that some face deportation.

Who are the Windrush generation?

"It is an absolute scandal that the Home Office doesn't even know how many people they have wrongly deported", she said.

Abbott said Theresa May should apologise for the "mess" which has taken place "as a direct outcome of the hostile environment she created".

Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesperson Ed Davey accused the Home Office of "seriously failing" the Windrush generation.

The Labour MP has called for an immediate amnesty for anyone who arrived in the United Kingdom as a child between 1948 and 1971, gathering a petition of over 100,000 signatures - the figure needed to potentially trigger a debate in Parliament.

Theresa May has announced she would meet Caribbean state leaders this week.

Barbados high commissioner to the UK, Guy Hewitt, claimed he had initially been told the Prime Minister's schedule was "full" this week.

May only became aware of a request for a meeting on Monday morning, and will discuss the issue with counterparts from Caribbean nations this week, her spokesman said.

However, under new immigation laws, these people must now prove continuous residence in the United Kingdom since 1973, something that has turned out to be nearly impossible for those who have not kept up detailed records.

She added: "This issue came to light because measures introduced in recent years to make sure only those with a legal right to live here can access things like NHS treatment and rented accommodation, meaning people must now be able to prove their status".

The announcement came after a cross-party group of 140 MPs wrote to Mrs May calling for an "immediate and effective" response to problems faced by members of the Windrush generation.
