An outbreak of E. coli has prompted the CDC to recommend that consumers and retailers discard any romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, growing region.
Symptoms of E. coli infection vary for each person, but often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days.
Fresh Food Manufacturing Co., based in Freedom, Pennsylvania, recalled 8,757 pounds of ready-to-eat salad after being notified by their lettuce supplier that it may be contaminated with E. Coli O157:H7, according to the USDA. However, illnesses can start anywhere from one to 10 days after exposure.
The New Jersey Department of Health on Friday said that people "who have bought romaine lettuce - including salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce - should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick".
"Consumer Reports is making this recommendation given the potentially fatal consequences of E. coli, the fact that there are still several unknowns about this outbreak, and that no type of romaine has been ruled definitively safe by government officials", Consumer Reports Director of Food Safety Research and Testing James E. Rogers, Ph.D., said.
The Centers for Disease Control says a multistate E. coli outbreak that has sickened almost three dozen people is linked to lettuce grown in Arizona.
Consumer Reports said it would be hard for buyers to tell where the romaine was grown, which is why they are saying consumers should avoid romaine altogether until the threat passes.
According to the lawsuit, the salad Fraser ate at Panera Bread on March 20 included Freshway-supplied romaine lettuce from the Yuma region. Twenty-two of the ill individuals have been hospitalized. There is no information to indicate that whole head romaine lettuce or hearts of romaine are involved in this outbreak.
At this time, no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified. Read CDC's advice to consumers, restaurants, and retailers. That's all the information the US agency gives in that regard as it adds, "no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified". The Daily Meal has reached out to Chipotle and Just Salad to inquire whether they will continue to use and serve romaine lettuce in their meals.
This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
Consumers who have symptoms of STEC infection should contact their health care provider to report their symptoms and receive care.
