Air Allegiant's "60 minutes" report released after seven months

Troubled Flight from CVG Included in

In a statement responding to questions from "60 Minutes", Capt. Eric Gust, vice president of operations for Allegiant Air, said the airline is proud of its "strong safety record", and emphasized the airline's low cancellation rate, which "demonstrates our operational integrity and commitment to safety and reliability".

Bill Nelson is calling for an investigation into the FAA for its reported handling of an Allegiant Air's poor safety record.

The FAA is recognized around the world as the gold standard with regard to transportation safety, and as a result the airline industry in the USA has never been safer. "The story is outdated, bears no resemblance to the Allegiant I know, and shows a real and troubling misunderstanding of the FAA's rigorous oversight of Allegiant and all United States airlines". He called the report's conclusion "reasonable", but said the airline is safe, otherwise the FAA would shut it down.

One passenger said she hadn't heard about the "60 Minutes" report but wasn't surprised once she was told about it.

Another one of the claims Allegiant made was that CBS was working with old information. "In this role he oversees all system pilots and pilot training operations, regulatory compliance and flight standards, and the safety and security of all operations, team members and passengers". That expansion, airport officials say, is to handle the more than 2.6 million passengers, a almost three-fold increase from 901,862 passengers in 2012, at the fast-growing air facility.

Ratliff says the report by 60 Minutes referenced some of those issues from the airliners past that Allegiant has since fixed. "To be clear, any employee who fails to report safety-related concerns through available channels is in violation of company policies, and may also be in violation of federal regulations". He said the airline complies with all FAA requirements, and that any suggestion the airline muzzled employees "is offensive and defamatory".

Allegiant is the only commercial airline that flies out of the Punta Gorda Airport with several flights coming in and out every day.

Seven months of investigation went into the report that aired Sunday night.

"Somebody didn't do their job, somebody better be fired", said Sandy Martini.

The airline is swatting back at the "60 Minutes" report, criticizing the journalism in the report. Annmarie McPate was is now looking for new travel plans for herself and her family.

In the years following, the airline replaced its entire fleet of aircraft at the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport with Airbus models. "All the bad things I've done in my life", she said to her sister, "and now I'm going to die".

"I wouldn't do that anymore".

"Yet for the most part, allegiant's difficulties have managed to stay under the radar of the flying public".

Tim Davis, the president of Suzi Davis Travel in Bloomington, who books travel through Bloomington's Central Illinois Regional Airport, said he believes air travel and travel on Allegiant remains safe despite the report.

"I know that Allegiant has improved their safety issues over the years and are continuing to improve", he said. However, we ask that you refer to Allegiant or the FAA for any specifics.
