USA's Hasay pulls out of Boston Marathon

5th anniversary of Boston Marathon Bombing, memorial held

"It is with deep regret that I have to withdraw from tomorrow's Boston Marathon", Hasay wrote.

Reigning Chicago Marathon champion Galen Rupp and a host of top USA women's contenders could produce the first American title sweep in 35 years at Monday's (today's) 122nd Boston Marathon.

When we spoke to Hasay on Friday, she said her foot was "doing great" and that she had not missed a workout since withdrawing from the World Half Marathon Championships on March 24 with a tight plantar.

Later that year, the former University of OR star followed with a third-place finish at the Chicago Marathon, with an improved time of 2:20:57.

On Sunday night, just hours before the 2018 Boston Marathon, elite race sponsor John Hancock announced that Jordan Hasay, the top returning American woman from 2017, has withdrawn from this year's race.

Key victories that carried Man City to Premier League title
An unimpressed United boss suggested some of his players got carried away by their 3-2 win over Manchester City last weekend and lost focus.

For all the impact made by Hasey in recent months, she was soundly beaten over 15 kilometres recently by Molly Huddle. Hasay, who is part of the Nike Oregon Project, finished in third place past year.

Can Kenya's 38-year-old Edna Kiplagat, pictured en route to world marathon silver last year, retain her Boston Marathon title against strong America opposition?

The question will be how much longer Kiplagat, now 38, can maintain her winning form.

Hasay's late withdrawal from Boston is a bummer, as she was one of the favorites to end the American women's 33-year title drought.

Shalane Flanagan becomes the first US woman since 1977 to win NYC Marathon. The Nike-sponsored runner lost by 21 seconds to Kenya's Geoffrey Kirui previous year and hopes to come out on top the second time around. Rupp took a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics then followed his Boston debut runner-up effort with a Chicago victory.
