US House Speaker Ryan Says He Won't Run for Re-Election

Reports: Ryan to Retire From Congress

But the Republican who ended up being personally criticized wasn't the president, but exiting House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Before the race to succeed him even officially got underway, outgoing Speaker Paul Ryan endorsed Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., in an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press" that will air Sunday. And it will fuel speculation that Ryan is watching for a coming Democratic surge, fueled by opposition to President Donald Trump, that could wrest control of the House from Republicans' grip. "This is going to make every Republican donor believe the House can't be held".

"The kind of board that he would go after would probably pay between $250,000 and $300,000 a year and he could probably get three or four of them", said Fred Foulkes, a professor of at Boston University's Questrom School of Business. Or will he keep any dissonant thoughts to himself, in an effort to maintain party unity at a time of great challenge? Ryan was once viewed as the future of the party, and he now is a rudder for a party regularly tossed about by Trump's shifting impulses.

The 48-year-old Wisconsin politician made it official Wednesday when he announced that he's volunteering to leave his post, which is third in line of succession for the presidency, and will not be running for re-election.

Ryan will no longer be making his speaker's salary of $223,500, but he will be eligible for a pension in a few years, and has an estimated net worth of slightly more than $6 million, according to a Center for Responsive Politics analysis of his 2016 financial filings. Some four dozen House Republicans - including powerful committee chairmen - are calling it quits. "And you were one of the main people that said you wanted to do more for the Republican Party, to expand the base". When he was first elected to Congress in 1998, he was a boy wonder, still in his 20s. The midterm is expected to be tougher, and costlier, than ever, especially amid the expanding battleground of open seats, which usually lack the built-in campaign apparatus of incumbency.

One is tempted to call Ryan's journey tragic, the tale of a young, idealistic family man transformed into an enabler for the most morally indifferent and utterly selfish president in our nation's history. Those doubts are clear in the way they talk about the fight to replace Ryan.

Kim Jong-un of North Korea Fetes Chinese Envoy as Ties Warm
North Korea's official holidays range from the birthday of its leaders, to its Thanksgiving Day based on the lunar calendar. Kim "expressed satisfaction with improving ties between the two parties and nations", the North Korean news agency said.

So you better make the most of it."He reminded reporters that he took the job "reluctantly" in 2015, when he took over from John Boehner, but Ryan also said he has no "regrets". We are very proud of him here in Janesville for doing that", Halabi said.

Ryan's allies insist the party's top fundraiser and champion of a crisp GOP message remains in full force.

House Speaker Paul Ryan's announcement that he plans to give up his gavel at the end of this Congress without waiting to see if voters tear it from his grasp in November wasn't a total surprise; it had been rumored for months, despite regular denials from his camp.

In Washington, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised Ryan's tenure, and the Democratic leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, said she hoped Ryan would work constructively on bipartisan goals before he leaves. He will likely compete with Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

Already discord is showing.
