Flood Warnings In Effect, May Influence Morning Commute

Flood waters cover the intersection of Hiawatha and State Fair boulevards in Syracuse in this 2015 file

The National Weather Service has issued its first flood watch for the weekend in anticipation of heavy rain falling this weekend. Be prepared to take quick action if a flash flood warning is issued.

Recent landslides and road slides include one in Beaver County on Route 68 between the Shippingport Bridge and Wolf Run Road, which was reported at 2 a.m. Monday, according to Herald.

A flash flood watch means that conditions are present that could lead to flash flooding. Bands of showers and thunderstorms could produce 1 to 3 inches of rain, with locally higher totals along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge.

Chilly conditions will replace the rain as the storm continues to move to the East. Freeze watches are in effect for Carroll, Frederick, and Washington Counties Monday night into Tuesday morning because temperatures are going to drop. Forecasters warned that risky flash flooding is still possible. Flood waters will also threaten some homes and businesses.

The weather service says the bulk of the storms are expected to move through the area just before or during the morning commute. The second half of the week looks mostly dry and much calmer although there could be a few showers overnight Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 36.
