Bruce McArthur: suspected Canadian serial killer charged with eighth murder

Bruce McArthur

Accused serial killer Bruce McArthur has been charged with an eighth count of first-degree murder, with Toronto police saying an global agency helped them identify the new victim.

Kanagaratnam's dismembered remains were discovered in planters with the other victims on the Mallory Cres. property where McArthur was a landscaper.

Like most of the other men the self-employed landscaper is believed to have slain, however, Kanagaratnam's remains were recovered from planters at a central Toronto home where McArthur once worked. He was not on file as missing in Canada. "We've had lots of global calls since our pleas began from people who just haven't seen family members in years".

Police had been concentrating on 22 potential identifications last week, but Kanagaratnam was not on the list, Idsinga said.

Police believe Kanagaratnam was killed between 3 September and 14 December, 2015.

Idsinga said investigators confirmed his identity with the help of an "international agency" but wouldn't expand on that.

After Outcry, Weibo Does U-Turn on Gay Content Ban
At the end of the article, he made his Weibo account public, and chose to come out as gay despite long fears of discrimination. In the post, the author wondered why China, as the world's second-largest economy, "can't be inclusive of two sexualities".

Police last month had released an edited photo of a dead man, a move that Idsinga said at the time was a "last resort" to identify the victim, now identified as Kanagaratnam.

It remains unclear how the man was identified or where he was from.

Idsinga has previously said that investigators are examining 15 unsolved homicides that took place between 1975 and 1997.

He emphasized, however, that police have not uncovered any evidence to suggest that McArthur's alleged killing spree began before 2010 when Navaratnam is believed to have died. Five months later, police charged McArthur with Esen's presumed death. Kinsman's sisters said they searched for their brother for six months before police eventually charged McArthur in his death. It was not immediately clear whether he had been reported missing in Sri Lanka, where his immediate family lives. Investigators say the 42-year-old was last seen in Toronto's gay village.

Kanagaratnam was among at least seven bodies which were found at a home in Toronto where McArthur stored some of his landscaping equipment.

The first probe - named Project Houston - was launched in 2012 to investigate the disappearances of Faizi, Kayhan and Navaratnam. But Idsinga confirmed last week the man may not be from Toronto, and said investigators had been following up with some worldwide agencies in relation to the photo. Many of them were known to frequent Toronto's Gay Village area.
