Police Responding to 'Ongoing Situation' at Lee Correctional Institution

Officials with the department of corrections say the fighting began at 7:15 p.m.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections first posted about the "ongoing situation" late Sunday night.

One of South Carolina's most unsafe prisons was secured early Monday after a "mass casualty incident" involving multiple inmates at several housing units, officials said.

The Lee County Fire Department tweeted out photos of multiple crews at Lee Correctional.

While no other details are immediately available, Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon confirms deputies are assisting SCDOC in its response at the maximum security prison. One inmate killed another during a fight in February.

The facility, which opened in 1993, houses around 1,500 prisoners, including some of the state's most violent criminals, reports the Associated Press.
