Uli Hoeness hits back at Frankfurt boss over Niko Kovac announcement
Croatian Niko Kovac will succeed Jupp Heynckes as Bayern Munich coach next season after agreeing a three-year contract, the German champions said yesterday (Friday).
Heynckes took over following ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti's dismissal in September and led Bayern to their sixth Bundesliga title in a row.
"It must be a day to celebrate for media and fans with so many highlights", said the 72-year-old coach of the 2018 German champion.
Kovac will also bring his 44-year-old brother Robert Kovac from Frankfurt as assistant coach. Both of us and Hasan [Salihamidzic] have tried for a very, very long time to persuade Jupp, ' Hoeness was quoted as saying in FourFourTwo after Bayern's 5-1 demolition of Borussia Monchengladbach.
Kicker magazine reported that Bayern would pay a fee of 2.2 million euros ($2.7 million) to trigger a release clause in Kovac's existing contract with Frankfurt.
Bayern' s latest coaching appointment has caused criticism from Frankfurt sports director Fredi Bobic who accused Munich of not acting entirely professionally.
When asked about his successor, Heynckes said: "Niko Kovac is a good choice, he is doing a very good job at Eintracht Frankfurt".

Winter Weather Advisory for ALL of CNY — ALERT
Light rain will change over to freezing rain Saturday evening before increasing in intensity overnight, Lincoln Park police said . Total ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are expected, which will create hard driving conditions.
"What Fredi Bobic said was outrageous", Hoeness told Sky Sport Germany.
A Bundesliga and DFB Cup double victor with Bayern as a midfielder in 2003, Kovac was Croatia manager as recently as 2015 before taking up the reins at the Commerzbank-Arena. "If we'd said it in four weeks, we'd have had peace and the Frankfurters the trouble". "In this phase which is extremely important for Eintracht Frankfurt".
'He told us that he had already decided.
Bobic added: "They did their thing and thought of themselves".
Bayern had appointed Kovac as he is familiar with the Bavarian side, having played for them before. Champions League qualification is possible this season after another stellar campaign. Bayern's loss is Hoffenheim's gain, however, as the young coach can continue to build his team to climb the Bundesliga table.
The decision, however, in favour of Kovac marks a turn for success-driven Bayern, who had previously opted for big-name coaches including Champions League winners Heynckes, Louis van Gaal and Pep Guardiola.
How will Bayern line up with Kovac at the helm?
