Syria's President Bashar al-Assad warns Western action would 'further destabilise' region

Donald Trump Warns Russia In Tweet: Missiles 'Will Be Coming' To Syria

Trump wrote in an incendiary early morning tweet that the missiles would be "nice and new and smart!", after a Russian official said any strike in retaliation to the attack on the rebel-held town of Douma would be shot down.

"France will not allow any escalation that could harm the stability of the region as a whole but we can't let regimes that think they can do everything they want, including the worst things that violate global law, to act", Macron said.

"It's too bad that the world puts us in a position like that", said Trump, as Defense Secretary James Mattis headed to the West Wing to present options for a retaliatory strike. Both the Syrian and Russian governments have said they would support the study.

The Pentagon refused to comment further on potential future military operations in response to Trump's tweet.

But across Western capitals opposition to military action also grew.

"The position is a very unsafe one because of Russian involvement, also because we have an erratic president of the United States".

Asked about possible US strikes on Syria, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that "it's necessary to avoid any steps that may fuel tensions in Syria".

The use of chemical weapons is a war crime.

"If there is a strike by the Americans, then. the missiles will be downed and even the sources from which the missiles were fired", Zasypkin told Hezbollah's al-Manar TV.

The drumbeat of military action appeared to grow louder, as Russian Federation stonewalled diplomatic efforts at the United Nations and France declared "proof" that Moscow's Syrian ally carried out a deadly chemical weapons attack that killed more than 40 Syrians.

"In particular, there were signs of severe irritation of mucous membranes, respiratory failure and disruption to central nervous systems of those exposed", the United Nations health agency said.

In London, British Prime Minister Theresa May held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss support for United States action against the Syrian regime.

Following the meeting, May spoke to Donald Trump and the pair agreed that the United Kingdom and the U.S. would "keep working closely together on the worldwide response", according to a statement from Downing Street.

A separate YouGov survey on Thursday found 61 percent of people think it would be necessary for parliament to vote on military action against Syria, with just 18 percent saying it was not necessary and 21 percent undecided.

Some MPs have backed Britain acting against Syria, warning that the use of chemical weapons was in breach of global law and could not be allowed to go unpunished.

"I would be happy for Parliament to be recalled but the PM does have the option to go ahead without this", Dr Sarah Wollaston told HuffPost.
