Sublime Daniel Ricciardo charges to China win, Vettel eighth

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton

Red Bull chose to pit both Ricciardo and Verstappen behind the safety auto, while their rivals stayed out.

Pole sitter Sebastian Vettel's flawless start to the year came to an end as he slipped to eighth, following a strategic blunder and a collision with Max Verstappen, for which the Dutchman was sanctioned.

The problems also come as the 28-year-old is considering his future with Red Bull, revealing earlier this week that he will wait until next month at the earliest to start talks.

Ferrari tried to use Kimi Raikkonen, who had yet to stop, as a bollard to hold up Bottas.

His teammate Verstappen had a more dramatic time of things. The double-stack allowed Hamilton to move back up to third and Raikkonen to take fifth from Ricciardo, but as all of the other leaders stayed out, the Red Bulls looked in good shape for the restart.

However, sterling work by his crew meant the popular Aussie headed out with under five minutes to spare, and though restricted to one flying lap in Q1 he was eventually able to put his Red Bull sixth on the grid.

Ricciardo's sublime overtake of Lewis Hamilton from a long way back was key to his victory in Shanghai. The Australian picked off Vettel thanks to DRS on the back straight to take second, leaving only Bottas on his radar.

Either Ricciardo or team-mate Max Verstappen failed to finish in 13 of the 20 races past year, winning three.

Lewis Hamilton finished a frustrated fifth, but was promoted back ahead of Verstappen, who was penalised for causing a collision with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Driver of the day No contest this - Ricciardo was stunning in the closing laps. Red Bull's strategy magic had been woven, with Ricciardo quickly firing off into the distance.

Daniel Ricciardo was the surprise victor of the Chinese Grand Prix as inspired tactics by his Red Bull Racing team and some ruthless overtaking gave the Australian victory in Shanghai.

This is the second time in seven days Ricciardo has had issues with an engine component after he suffered an energy store failure in Bahrain which forced him into a lap two retirement.

Lance Stroll gained six positions on the opening lap but was unable to seriously challenge for points as he took 14th, ahead of Williams team-mate Sergey Sirotkin, Marcus Ericsson and Romain Grosjean. Verstappen meanwhile was given a 10s penalty for causing that collision. Nico Hulkenberg was able to take sixth for Renault, while Fernando Alonso barged past Vettel with two laps to go for seventh, frustrating the Ferrari driver who had to settle for P8 at the chequered flag.

Carlos Sainz Jr. nearly got Vettel on the last lap but had to settle for ninth, with Haas' Kevin Magnussen rounding out the top 10.
