The revelation comes amid a courtroom drama that unfolded on Friday, as Cohen's attorneys and Trump's lawyers began a fight hours before with the US Attorney's Office in Manhattan over a massive raid of Cohen's records, reports CNN.

Cohen did not appear in court on Friday and has not been charged with a crime. In addition to searching his home, office and hotel room, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seized material from Cohen's cellphones, tablet, laptop and safe deposit box, according to people briefed on the warrants.

Prosecutors said those reviews found "zero" emails between Cohen and Trump and instead indicate that Cohen "is in fact performing little or no legal work" that would be subject to attorney-client privilege. But Mr McKay said "the attorney-client privilege can't at the same time be used as a sword and as a shield".

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, sued Trump to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement she signed shortly before the 2016 election for $130,000, on the grounds that Cohen signed it but Trump did not. The agenda, says the dossier, covered questions on covering up payments to Europe-based hackers targeting Hillary Clinton's campaign and "Moscow's secret liaison with the TRUMP team more generally".

The outlet cited two unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

Mr Cohen had already notified the US District Court in Los Angeles on Thursday that he meant to request a stay in Ms Daniels' lawsuit against him and Mr Trump "on the grounds that an ongoing criminal investigation overlaps with the facts of this case".

Stormy Daniels's attorney asked to join in on the hearing, as he said he believes items seized were in regards to his client.
