Commonwealth Games 2018: WATCH shocking moment Callum Hawkins COLLAPSES in marathon

Michael Shelley of Australia celebrates as he crosses the line to win gold in the Men's marathon

Radcliffe did defend race victor Shelley against social media criticism claiming he heartlessly ran past Hawkins on his way to claiming gold in the event.

He struggled for a number of minutes without medical attention in distressing scenes in the 27C (80F) heat, before eventually being taken away in an ambulance. Instead, some took photographs on their mobile phones.

Commentating on the BBC, former middle distance runner Steve Cram said it was "a disgrace" that it took so long for any paramedics to attend to Hawkins.

"I'm just concerned for his welfare".

Hawkins was visibly struggling before falling and banging his head against a barrier.

"The emotion and the crowd really got me home in the last couple of kilometres". He's going to hurt himself.

"We should have some more medical attention".

This is a guy in real distress and someone needs to recognise it.

"Where on earth is the help?" he said.

Going into the final quarter of the race Hawkins, who finished fourth in the World Championships a year ago, was looking set to claim his first major medal. I do believe it's disgraceful.

"I like many others was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages of today's marathon", said chief organiser Mark Peters.

Hawkins, speaking from hospital, said: "Thanks for all your messages of support today and to the Gold Coast University Hospital staff". Obviously, the health of the athlete is absolutely prime.

"Sometimes medical people arrive and athletes have to make a decision whether they want to go on or not and I understand that was part of the discussion". "More information will be issued in due course".

Kim Jong-un of North Korea Fetes Chinese Envoy as Ties Warm
North Korea's official holidays range from the birthday of its leaders, to its Thanksgiving Day based on the lunar calendar. Kim "expressed satisfaction with improving ties between the two parties and nations", the North Korean news agency said.

"Unfortunately athletes do run themselves to exhaustion and there is rarely a marathon where someone isn't collapsing".

GOLDOC confirmed medical staff were posted at 500-metre intervals in the final kilometres of the course with radio communications.

Organisers have been slammed on social media for the running the race in hot conditions and for the lengthy delay in getting Hawkins medical treatment as he lay in obvious distress on the road.

Peoplewatching the race television took on media to share their outrage during that full time it took to get medical care booking those audiences using pictures of Hawkins particular ire. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of GC2018", he said.

"I saw him (Callum) on the Sundale Bridge and thought 'Oh s--' and just tried to hang on".

"I was starting to go myself", Shelley said.

Hawkins was listed as a "Did Not Finish" by race organizers.

He added: "You've got to push through the wall". And that's what Callum was doing.

The good news is Hawkins seems to be doing ok from a medical standpoint.

"You never want to see anything like that (Hawkins' collapse)".

"He was going so well", Simpson said.

Going into the final quarter of the race Hawkins, who finished fourth in the World Championships previous year, was looking set to claim his first major medal. But at the same time I wasn't feeling that great myself and thinking I need to get to the line before the same thing happens to me and hold on to a medal.

Hawkins had about a two-minute lead over Shelley but became disoriented in the humid conditions.
