Trump yet to make 'final decision' on Syria strike

British PM May summons ministers to discuss possible military action in Syria

In a live address to the nation, President Trump said the strikes were aimed at deterring chemical weapons use.

Russia's military says Britain was behind the alleged April 7 chemical attack that killed dozens of Syrians in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus.

Canada has become the latest to lay the blame for a deadly chemical-weapons attack in Syria last week at Syrian President Bashar Assad's doorstep, despite Russian suggestions to the contrary.

He added the the US and it's allies are prepared for "sustained" response until Syrian government stops use of chemical weapons.

As Russia warned that a military conflict could erupt with the U.S. over Syria, U.S. President Donald Trump convened his National Security Council on Thursday to discuss a U.S. response and said a decision would be "made fairly soon". The attack evoked large-scale criticism of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Reuters and CNN reported witnesses have heard explosions in Damascus, and smoke can be seen rising outside the city.

French defense minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Saturday said Russian Federation was warned ahead of joint US, UK, French air strike on Syria. Syrian television reported that a scientific research centre had been hit.

"We have a number of options", said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, "and all of those options are still on the table".

"With every victory on the ground, some Western countries raise their voices and intensify their activities in an effort to change the trajectory of events", said Assad. "Syria's responsible. We are all in agreement", she said.

Russian Federation has systematically used its Security Council veto to block any move against Syria, which it has backed since 2015 when it helped Assad turn the tables against opposition forces.

"The nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep", Trump said when announcing the strikes.

After days of deliberation with military officials and national security advisers, Trump seemed to walk back on his initial threats of striking Syria, tweeting: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

"It has reduced the regime's ability to use chemical weapons in the future and sends a clear and strong message that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated by the worldwide community", Ms Payne told reporters in Sydney.

Senior government ministers were summoned back from a spring break to discuss the attack last week in Douma, which has sparked a tense confrontation between Western nations and Syria and its allies, led by Russian Federation.

Biological samples from the area of the alleged chemical attack in Syria have tested positive for chlorine and a sarin-like nerve agent, according to a United States official familiar with the U.S. analysis of the test results.

Questions about the timetable came a day after Trump signaled an attack in a response to a Russian threat to shoot down USA missiles aimed at Syria.

"Syrian air defence blocks American, British, French aggression on Syria", the reports said.

He said the U.S. would be a "partner and a friend" to the Middle East but the fate of the region lay in the hands of its own people.

"Smart missiles should fly toward terrorists, not the legal government that has been fighting worldwide terrorism for several years on its territory", Zakharova wrote in response to Trump's Wednesday tweet.

Trump also called out Russia's promise in 2013 that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.

Despite several tweets threatening military action against Syria by Donald Trump the U.S has yet to launch military strikes on the Assad regime.

In that strike, 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched from the USS Ross and USS Porter in the Mediterranean.
