MI, DD in search of first win

Jason Roy smashed an unbeaten 91 as Delhi Daredevils defeated hosts Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in a last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League. The match was evenly balanced as Delhi needed 35 runs off 24 balls and with Roy at the crease the away side was very much in contention to win their first game.

It will be the ninth match of season 11 where the Mumbai Indians face Delhi Daredevils today.

With a star studded bowling line up including T20 stars Mustafizur Rahman and Jasprit Bumrah and a 194-run total to defend, odds were heavily stacked in favour of Mumbai.

In order to open, MI asked the in-form batsman Suryakumar Yadav to express himself at the top knowing the fact that he has never opened in his entire career. Just three overs to go.

The Englishman was particularly severe on Hardik Pandya smashing him for two sixes and a four off successive deliveries as the bowler went for 21 runs in his second over. They were given a reasonable score to win in just six overs.

But the table simply says both teams have played two and lost two.

Mumbai Indians set a modest target of 148 runs after a below-par performance from the batting line-up. But soon after that, Rahul Tewatia applied the brakes and send Lewis back, who was caught by Jason Roy at mid-off. Mumbai Indians take on Delhi Daredevils in the first match of our double-header - we're on air for all the build-up from 11am.

Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma and Billy Stanlake all picked up two wickets each while Rashid Khan and Shakib Al Hasan also bagged a scalp apiece. Although Krunal Pandya outscored him with the bat, Hardik made up for it with the ball.

While Suryakumar was slick and innovative - he found the third-man boundary with a late uppercut off Trent Boult and the deftest glide to a yorker from Mohammed Shami - Lewis used his strength to punish Daredevils' poor lengths. The pitch had a good smattering of grass that had been rolled in, and both captains expected it to be good for batting. Dananjaya, who conceded 5 runs in his first over, was hit for 18 runs in his second over by Pant as Delhi reached 100 runs in 10th over.

Openers Suryakaumar Yadav and Ewan Lewis, who had taken the rest of the bowling pack to the cleaners were kept quiet by Tewatia in the seventh over but their total was still a formidable 87-0.

It also brought up the 100-run partnership for the first wicket with Suryakumar Yadav.

Out of 20 encounters in IPL, MI holds the lead with 11 wins against DD. Even though MI ended up on the losing side, Markande was the best bowler on the night, and Delhi will have to deal with his variations in a bid to score quick runs in the Powerplay.
