Gov. Abbott says National Guard's deployment necessary

Texas governor excuses military deployment to border, citing rise in apprehensions

Trump's decision last week came as he expressed concern on Twitter over the caravan of several hundred Central American immigrants in Mexico heading towards the US border.

"It's also not a permanent solution".

Sessions cited a Department of Homeland Security report about spiking illegal border crossings in March, showing a 203 percent increase in illegal crossings from March 2017 and March 2018.

Instead, the National Guard troops would support Border Patrol agents charged with law enforcement on the border, Ducey said at a press conference Friday at the Border Patrol station in Nogales.

"There is no militarization of the border", Ducey said in front of a half-dozen rows of National Guard troops dressed in fatigues standing alongside Border Patrol agents.

"We want to shut down the gangs and smugglers", Abbott said, before posing for photos with the troops.

"With Operation Guardian Shield underway, more members of the Arizona National Guard have joined them to provide much needed support for these security efforts".

On April 12 he said this move was necessary.

It was the ideal start for Pittsburgh who came out and scored a goal at the 2:38 mark of the first period to get the crowd going. Give the rookie some playoff experience. "It's just little things like that that really is the playoff intensity".

Pro-immigrant organizations on the border said the governor has the wrong focus.

"I am confident Governor Brown will not use our National Guard to harass or tear apart immigrant families in California", he said in a statement. It will be added eyes and ears for Border Patrol that will make the arrests.

"Here are the facts: there is no massive wave of migrants pouring into California", Brown wrote the Trump Cabinet members.

Meanwhile, the first members of the National Guard in Texas have already made their way to the U.S-Mexico border.

In contrast, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is contributing 1,000 troops, embraced Trump's mission the day it was announced, saying it would promote the rule of law and "help ensure we are doing everything we can to stem the flow of illegal immigration". Meant to help reduce drug and human trafficking, the effort cost an estimated $110 million.

Last week, officials with the Texas Military Department confirmed the troops' deployment to the Valley, clarifying they would serve in a support role for Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection officials.

Under the agreement, which expires at the end of September, the state will use most of the additional federal funding for an existing program to combat transnational crime and will deploy numerous additional Guard members statewide rather than at the border. California had accepted similar requests by President George W. Bush in 2006 and President Barack Obama in 2010, as Brown noted in his letter.
