World Meteorological Organization retires devastating 2017 hurricane names

World Meteorological Organization retires 4 hurricane names from 2017 season

After the extensive storm damage caused by recent storms, the World Meteorological Organization decided their names are not worth repeating.

Also on the new retired storm list is Hurricane Nate, which didn't match the power of Harvey, Irma and Maria but was deadly in its own right. The 2005 season has the most retired names, with five.

According to Sean Breslin, editor of Weather.com, Harvey was used as a storm name six times, starting in 1981.

Harold, Idalia, Margot, and Nigel will appear on the 2023 list of storm names. In comparison, the 1981-2010 averages are 12 tropical storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
